There were two groups of people in this chapter. Group 1 was Moses and Aaron who contacted the Lord directly (Aaron was sort of contacting directly). Group 2 was the Israelites who did not know much about the Lord.
This chapter mentioned the life of their second month out of Egypt. Group 2 hadn't adapted the life outside of Egypt and its identification changed yet. People still missed the life in Egypt though they were slaves. Because they could eat meat and bread as much as they wanted. So they complained to Moses about the poor living in the wilderness.
Frankly, it would be mean if we criticize the Israelites based on this chapter. Try to imagine, many of them were born as slaves, as well as their friends, family, parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. Jehovah-jireh (Yahweh-Yireh) and God were just legends and far from their life. God might even not exist in the past four-hundred years to them! How could they know God? How could they trust God?
On the contrary, Moses was the one whom God told and commanded directly. God was real to Moses and Aaron. Hence, both of them trusted God without any problem.
See, group 1 and group 2 were so different to face and trust God because of how close or how far they were with God. To group 1, God told them about his plans and his thoughts. Even they knew something bad was going to happen, and yet, they would not be afraid because they also knew the results. However, group 2 could not know anything thing from God. They had to swallow their fear and force themselves to trust God, trust what Moses and Aaron told them. How difficult it was! No wonder whey had a lot of complaints.
Now a day, Christians can face God in person because of the privilege from Jesus' sacrifice. We can be group 1 but not group 2. God spoke to Moses and Aaron in the past. He is doing the same things to us. How good to be group 1!
